The Minute Repeater
When operated, the minute repeater strikes the hours, quarters and minutes elapsed since the last quarter. The first hammer strikes the hours with a low note for each hour passed. The striking of the quarters is then effected by two hammers that strike the high
and the low gong alternately. Finally, the second hammer then strikes the high gong
at the rate of one strike for each minute elapsed since the last quarter.
The Tourbillon
The Tourbillon, a sophisticated and complex device, was invented in the late 18th century by the father of modern watchmaking, Abraham-Louis Breguet, who later patented it
in 1801. With this innovation, he succeeded in improving the precision of pocket watches by offsetting the advances and delays resulting from the effects of the force of gravity.
By rotating on its axis at the speed of one complete revolution per minute, the device automatically compensates for possible delays or advances that might be generated by the imbalance of a balance.
